Dear Colleagues and Friends,
It is an honor and a great pleasure to announce the International Plastic Surgery Congress-Sarajevo 2024. From September 19 to 22, 2024, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, will become the epicenter of groundbreaking discussions and innovative ideas in plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgery.
Hosted by the Society of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons in BiH (UPREHBiH), this congress is a joint effort by ICOPLAST, ESPRAS, BAFPRAS, FELLOWS IN SCIENCE, and UPREHBIH.
While aesthetic surgery takes center stage, our discussions will span a number of critical topics including microsurgery, breast reconstruction, hand and nerve surgery, and the latest in cosmetic nonsurgical treatments. Our aim is to create a platform where global experts converge, sharing insights and experiences to propel our field forward. Discussing and assessing the clinical experience from world’s leading medical centres will provide the best solutions and progress in the Balkans and other regions from which the colleagues are coming from.
I want to emphasize that the Balkans have become a unique space in the medical sense, in terms of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Through organizations like BAFPRAS, we’ve fostered a culture of collaboration and knowledge exchange that now demands a global stage. This Congress stands as a testament of the progress made to-date, offering a unique opportunity for experts to unveil their latest breakthroughs, surgical strategies, and solutions to complex cases. I am especially proud that this Congress, unlike the previous 12 Balkan Congresses, will feature an ICOPLAST and ESPPRAS symposium. With a spotlight on complications and their remedies, we’re paving the way for transformative advancements in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.
As Chair of the Organizing Committee and President of the Balkans Association of PRS and UPREHBIH, I see this gathering as more than just a conference; it’s a bridge between innovation and implementation. Together, we’ll ensure that the insights and methodologies shared here resonate far beyond Sarajevo, reaching patients across continents with enhanced care and expertise.
I look forward to welcoming all those who will attend the Congress in our beautiful Olympic City. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I can promise that this Congress will remain forever in your hearts.
Warm regards,
Prof. Dr. Reuf Karabeg
Congress President

The Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Maxillofacial Surgeons was established in 1999. Mr. Reuf Karabeg was appointed the first President of the Association. The Association organised 2 large congresses. The first congress was organised in 2003 in Sarajevo when the colleagues from Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and BiH met, with participation of the colleagues from six continents. The second congress was organised in Tuzla in 2006. The Association was then divided in two: the Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons in BiH (UPREHBiH) and the Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons.
The Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons in BiH was established on the level of Bosnia and Herzegovina based on the Decision of the BiH Ministry of Justice (the original Decision is available on the Association website). The newly-established Association gathers plastic, reconstructive and esthetic surgeons from both Entities, i.e. the entire BiH. The Association is a member of ICOPLAST, IPRAS, ESPRAS, BAFPRAS and the Fellows in Science Association.
The Association organized the 6th Balkan Congress of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons in Sarajevo in 2011 and co-organized the First Eurasian Melanoma and Skin Cancer Congress in 2014 with colleagues, dermatologists and oncologists. In November 2016, the UPREH/UPREK BiH Symposium was held in Zenica with international participation, covering the topics related to aesthetic surgery, oncology, reconstructive surgery and hand surgery.
In 2017, a symposium was held in Sarajevo organized by UPREHBiH.
Fellows in Science gathers the Associations of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons from Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and BiH. We have held four joint congresses with participation of the world leading figures: in 2013 in Slovenia (Ljubljana), in 2015 in Croatia (Dubrovnik), in 2017 in Serbia (Belgrade) and in 2022 in Croatia (Dubrovnik).
Unfortunately, the Fellows in Science Congress which was to be held in BiH (Mostar) in 2019 was postponed only 2 months before the onset of the known situation with Covid-19, although it had been fully prepared in terms of organisation. It was agreed that the next 5th Fellows in Science Congress would be held in September in 2024 in Sarajevo.
The presidents of national associations of the BAPRAS Members agreed at the meeting held in Romania (Cluj) in 2020 during the 11th Congress that the 12th Congress of the Balkans’ Association would be held in 2023 in Turkey and the 13th Congress in 2024 in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
November, 2022.
